Perhaps you have noticed that there is a vast difference between prices of individual essential oils on the market. This is due to a number of factors including quality, availability, and distillation practices.  While true "pure" essential oils are more expensive, they are generally a great deal because most bottles are less expensive than a co-pay for a doctor visit and/or prescriptions.

There are no regulatory standards for the term “therapeutic grade.” Therefore, it is important to be very careful about the brand that you choose to use.  The term PURE or THERAPEUTIC is misleading and grossly overused.  Most essential oils that pass through a simple gas chromatograph (GC) test are labeled as PURE THERAPEUTIC GRADE.  But, the GC is incomplete and in-comprehensive.  Oils that are synthetic and chemically distilled can easily pass this test.  Thus, most oils labeled “pure therapeutic grade” oils are not pure at all.  Most are cheap, synthetic, or chemically processed oils that may smell good, but have lost most, if not all, of their chemical constituents needed to provide a therapeutic result.

Doing some research about the company’s testing procedures and manufacturing processes will help you understand whether or not it is good quality oil. Also, try comparing essential oil brands side-by-side, and you will be able to notice a difference in quality. Pay attention to the purity of the oil.  If it is overbearing, it may indicate that it contains chemical synthetic substitutes.
In my research, I have discovered CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) essential oils.  This rating requires rigorous testing, which includes the Mass Spectrometry test (MS)– a far more inclusive, but expensive, test that many other companies choose not to utilize.  Oils that are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade are guaranteed to be free of impurity, and 100% as nature intended.  In addition to being pure, the oil is potent because the testing identifies the exact level of every constituent.  These oils are also identified with a supplement label or “GRAS” rating, which means that according to the FDA, these are safe for internal consumption.  Just compare bottles of essential oils, and you will realize that CPTG stands alone in the industry, and is truly a cut above the rest.
If you want to know if an essential oil is pure, inspect it!  Often, you can detect poor quality oils by their oily, bitter, rancid or perfumey nature.  When you smell a pure essential oil, you will notice that it smells crystal clean and natural. You can also try testing the feel of different brands of essential oils.  If the oil is pure, it should easily absorb into your skin without feeling slick or oily.   You can also try dabbing a little on your fingertip and stick on your tongue.  If it has a fake, bitter, yucky taste, it is most likely synthetic. Most oils available today are poor quality and should never be taken internally.  Whereas, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils can be used internally for a number of health benefits.
For these reason, we endorse only doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils, as we believe them to be the safest, purest, and most beneficial essential oil available today.
